NYE Sydney

What's on Sydney's Top Ten Events for New Year's Eve

I know many of you will think, it is week's away yet, and if you are like me you will have no idea what to cook for dinner tonight never mind what you are going to do for NYE! Well to make life a little easier we have come up with ten great events to choose from, out of heaps that will be happening all over Sydney.
NYE in Sydney - Make your Mark
“This year’s theme is ‘Make Your Mark’ which is about each of us making our own unique contribution not just in 2011, but in the decade ahead,” said the Lord Mayor. Thinking caps on how are you going to make your mark?
Brand new “X” shaped fireworks and cutting edge pyrotechnic shapes including lightning bolts, crescent moons, double hearts, bowties and a star inside a ring will all premiere this year, while for the very first time a multi-layered Bridge Effect will mark Sydney as the New Year’s Eve capital of the world. The show will feature 7000 kilograms of explosive devices, including approximately 11,000 shells, 20,000 shooting comets and 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects fired from barges, city rooftops and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.   So, as usual it will be big!!

A few tips about watching the fireworks
1. However tempting don't start drinking too early otherwise it won't matter how good a night you had and how good the fireworks are you won't remember a thing!
2. Try and take your rubbish with you, don't just leave bottle and glasses etc around it is just not cool.
3. Arrive just before nine o'clock, find a family with young children the chances are they will leave and you can have their spot!
But most imporantly have a great night whatever you decide to do!

2010 Sydney New Year’s Eve Highlights
5 – 7pm: Pre–Show Entertainment  -  Aerial displays fill the skies above Sydney Harbour, making their mark from 5pm with an acrobatic flyover.  Action will take place both in the sky and on the water as the Sydney Ports’
fire fighting vessel ‘Ted Noffs’ sails through Sydney Harbour.
8pm – 2am: Projections on Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylons  -  Still and digital video projections appear on the North and South pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A date stamp will appear as a hallmark image on the eastern pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. ‘Welcome to Sydney’ will appear in English, Gadigal, Arabic, Cantonese, French, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Russian, Samoan, Spanish, Dutch, Vietnamese and
Swahili, which are the fifteen languages of Sydney’s top migrant populations and tourist visitors for the event.  Watch the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons closely for the countdown to both the 9pm Family and Midnight Firework displays.
8 – 8:40pm: Indigenous Smoking Ceremony - Three Indigenous vessels including Deerubbin and Tribal Warrior will conduct a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse the harbour of negative spirits as projections beam on to the
Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons.  White smoke will fire from all six fireworks barges on the harbour, along with stunning new red flare fireworks called Falling Angels.
8:40 – 8:45pm: Acknowledgement of Country - Immediately following the Indigenous Smoking Ceremony, an Acknowledgment of Country will be held on the Harbour to show respect to the Traditional Custodians of the land and sea, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation and all First Nations People.
9 – 9:08pm: Family Fireworks - Synchronised to a colourful soundtrack of children’s movie themes and favourite pop songs, the 9pm Family Fireworks display is a beautifully choreographed eight minute pyrotechnic performance from four barges on Sydney Harbour, nine city building rooftops and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Be dazzled by the red and white checkerboard waterfall fireworks which will tumble from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
9:08pm – 11:30pm: Harbour of Light Parade - A parade of more than 50 vessels including Tall Ships, Sydney’s Heritage Fleet and Commercial Charter Vessels decorated to make their mark will ‘switch on their lights’ and sail
a 15 kilometre loop around Sydney Harbour.
9:08 pm to midnight: Make Your Mark Firings  - Something new for 2010 Sydney New Year’s Eve is the inclusion of our “Make your Mark” X marker firings from six barges which will create growing anticipation in the countdown to
midnight.
11:59:50pm- 00:12am: Midnight finale and Bridge Effect - Sydney makes its mark with the largest and most technologically advanced annual fireworks show in the world as the internationally renowned Midnight Fireworks display bursts into colour for a grand finale on New Year's Eve.  This year, the highly anticipated bridge effect will be multi-layered for the very first time.
