Keep Holly Dancing

Sydney Dance Company is excited to launch a new crowd funding initiative, which aims to give talented young Australian dancer, Holly Doyle, a once in a lifetime opportunity - the chance to spend a year rehearsing, performing and touring (both nationally and internationally) with the Company as a launchpad for her career.
To keep Holly dancing with Sydney Dance Company and give her the break that every talented young Australian dreams of, $100,000 has to be raised.
And as part of its fundraising strategy, Sydney Dance Company is reaching out to the community via an exciting new crowd funding initiative, developed with the support of advertising agency The Works Sydney and QBT Consulting.
Developed around the theme of Keep Holly Dancing, the campaign involves a dedicated website at
www.ayearonthewharf.com
with exclusive video footage of Holly performing a unique piece of contemporary choreography created by Rafael Bonachela.
A preview of Holly’s performance is available for anyone who visits the website, but to see the whole dance work, key fundraising targets must be reached.
Every donation, from as little as one dollar, helps to ‘unlock’ Holly’s performance, with new segments of the video footage becoming available as targets are achieved.
The Keep Holly Dancing campaign is part of a larger Sydney Dance Company initiative, established to provide promising young Australian dancers with breakthrough opportunities to kickstart their professional careers.
A Year on the Wharf, named after the Company’s home at Wharf 4 in the Walsh Bay arts precinct, is an annual scholarship program providing financial support for one outstanding young dancer, from anywhere in Australia, to join Sydney Dance Company for one year.

2 One Another

Sydney Dance Company are performing 2 One Another at the Sydney Theatre. This work is world premier choreographed by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela.
I have to admit when I was young I didn't enjoy this type of dance, it is very modern with no story. But now I can appreciate this type of work, its intricate form developing in front of you. The dancers performed together with great precision.  The worked flowed as Bonachela used certain moves to link the different sections together making it a cohesive, spellbinding piece of work.
The music is quite varied, started with very machine like electronic music turning to a choral more classical style.  Nick Wales did an amazing job arranging the music for this work. Bonachela asked poet and writer Samuel Webster to watch the dancers and write about what he saw. He then used these phrases as a basis for creating the movements.
What amazed me about this work was the amount of movement it contained, it was continuous and often at times you didn't know where to look there was so much happening. It was great watching it from the circle as some of it reminded me of synchronized swimming. Being high up however, you didn't get the full effect of the amazing light projections at the back of the stage. If you did watch it you couldn't watch the dancers are the same time.  The work emphasized interaction between people, in groups and pairs as they moved, interacted and supported each other. Dance solos highlight the solitude of human existence.
It was everything it promised to be, if you want to see it, it plays until 31 March.
