The Brothers Size

The Brothers Size is playing at the SBW Stables Theatre until 16 April. It is written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, if you haven't heard of this writer before, well I think you will be hearing a lot more of him in the future. He has won a load of awards since he graduated from the Yale School of Drama's playwriting program in 2007.  This play is superbly written and is an Australian premier production.
The actual theme of this play makes it sound like it is going to be a bit depressing but there is quite a bit of comedy, music and just the sheer brilliance of it, when you leave the theatre you just go, wow that was fantastic!

Imara Savage the Director is very modest in her write up on the program, to stage a play with only a basket ball prop and lighting and to keep up the pace and dramatic effect is no mean feat but I believe you did it! The stage is black and bare throughout the performance, which I know sounds like it should be some amateur production running on a shoe string but this is not like that at all.
The play is set in deep South America and consists of three characters Ogun Size played by Marcus Johnson, Oshoosi Size played by Meyne Wyatt and Elegba played by Anthony Taufa.  The play revolves around the two brothers and their bond with each other. Ogun being the older brother feels responsible for his young brother Oshoosi who is not long out of prison.  Oshoosi is trying to find himself, he wants the good live and definitely the girls but is just not sure of how to get this, until his friend,"brother" from prison Elegba comes back into his life, which will Oshoosi choose? I think that Meyne Wyatt who only graduated from NIDA in 2010 has a great career ahead of him. He played Oshoosi with great passion and energy.
The production contains live music performed by Miriam Lieberman, it enhances the play beautifully with tension and mood making. The opening with the three men each with their shirts off chanting to the beat of the drum makes one very dramatic opening and has you ready and prepared for what is coming next.
I highly recommend you go and see this production, I know I have recommended a few recently! Well, when I see a bad one I will let you know!
