Callout for artists big and small for Surry Hills Festival
Surry Hills Festival is calling for installation artists, performers and other creatives to showcase their work to the huge arts and culture loving crowds that flock to the annual festival. Set to be staged at Surry Hills hub on October 27th 2012 at the beautiful Prince Alfred Park, crowds this year are expected to exceed more than 90,000.
The Festival Company, the founders of Peats Ridge Festival, have come on-board for the first time this year to help maximise the funds raised by the Festival for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre.
Arts & Culture Manager for The Festival Company, Vic Johnstone, says “The Surry Hills Festival will feature a much bigger arts element this year. We’re looking for exciting, interactive and engaging artists to give their time to help create the eclectic festival experience that the community comes for. Surry Hills Festival is the major fundraiser for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre and the money raised for the SHNC by the festival goes directly back to the local Surry Hills community.”
With Surry Hills renowned for its vibrant creative community, all breeds of artists are encouraged to come on board. Whether it is installation work, photography exhibit or an idea for a kids’ creative workshop, Surry Hills Festival welcomes all imaginative proposals no matter how big or small.
The Kids retreat will have a stronger cultural component, reflecting Surry Hills’ diverse ethnic and Indigenous communities.
Children’s Festival Manager, Kristina Karasulas, says “We’re seeking the arts and children’s programs to reflect this whilst combining all the fun of the fair. The Festival seeks creatives in the field of culture, art, craft and performance, and of course there is a need for face painters, fairies and other colourful characters to entertain our wee little local beings”.
Vital funds will be raised at the festival to support the work of the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre for the local community.

Site specific and/or utilise existing festival venues and infrastructure (eg. Temporary fences, water stations and themed areas)
Address principals of sustainability

Vivid 2012
Last night the media were invited to the launch of Vivid 2012. Andrew Stoner NSW Deputy Premier was in attendance and spoke highly of this years festival. He also re-irradiated the importance of the Festival in bringing people to Sydney, putting us on the World map and re-enforcing that we have some of the best visual artists in the world. He also said that Vivid and Sydney is fast becoming the place to come if you are a visual artist wanting to develop and grow your skills.
This year will bring more interactive light displays than every before with over 60 interactive instillation from Walsh Bay, The Rocks and Circular Quay.
Vivid Ideas will connect Australia's creative thinkers with global leaders and industry talents in over 100 creative industry and public events . A range of topics will be explored from electronic gaming to fashion, film craft, design and publishing to architecture and photography.
It is going to be an amazing festival of light, music and new ideas.
Lights go on tonight Friday 25 May - 11 June, 6 pm - midnight.

Taste of Sydney 2012
If you are reading this and you didn't go, you missed it! Book it in your diary for next year. Taste of Sydney just had it's fourth Sydney festival. The weather was kind, in fact I got slightly burnt where I missed with the suntan cream. Don't get on the scales before you go to Taste of Sydney and then weigh yourself again afterwards, that is a very bad idea. I was amazed at how many restaurants were there. There was so much to see we spent three hours there in no time at all.
Taste of Sydney is an array of tents housing different restaurants and food stalls. It also had a large selection of wines, a few beers and cider. It was $25 online to buy a ticket to get in, once you were in you needed to buy crowns, as little or no cash could be used at the stalls. $1 bought 1 crown though nothing was under 4 crowns, that I could see. Most of the food was $10 for a very small portion and if I was going to criticize anything it would be the cost. We ate through (literally) $110 no trouble at all. The drinks seemed to be the best value.
We had some very good Sushi and a fish ball! I had two ciders and a lemonade. Plus I had a yoghurt, some extremely good salmon, a clam, cheese & pear and more. If you like food and drink this is definitely the event for you, you can try heaps in fact the hardest part is deciding what not to try! Make sure it is in your diary for next year.

Sydney Festival 2012
NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney, The Hon. Barry O’Farrell, announced last night that
Sydney Festival will receive $1.7m supplementary funding.
The $1.7m includes $500,000 specifically for a program of events in Western Sydney, building on Sydney Festival’s commitment to presenting work in Western Sydney since 2003. The $500,000 will enable Sydney Festival to further expand these activities, working collaboratively with Parramatta City Council on an exciting and comprehensive ten-day Festival of free and ticketed events.
The Premier announced the funding boost, saying that it was part of the Government’s pledge to deliver
more events in Western Sydney.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Western Sydney families to attend and enjoy Festival events in their
region. To be able to enjoy a concert or stage performance without having to travel into the city will be
great for families and seniors.
“It is estimated Sydney Festival contributes more than $50 million to the NSW economy each year. [The Festival in Western Sydney] will also be a boost for the Western Sydney economy as visitors eat, drink and maybe do a spot of shopping” the Premier said.
Of the $1.7m, $1.2m will be directed towards the overall program of events and will ensure that Sydney Festival remains as one of Australia’s leading annual arts events.
Festival Director Lindy Hume was enthusiastic about the news, “This is a wonderful demonstration of the state government’s confidence in Sydney Festival to transform Sydney each summer with art, music, ideas and the imagination of the world’s most extraordinary artists.
“The additional funding for the Parramatta program will enable us to truly celebrate Sydney – a city which has not one but two CBDs. We plan to reflect Parramatta’s dynamism and cultural diversity with a program that not only welcomes local audiences but will also have city audiences jumping on trains and Rivercats to Parramatta to be where the action is in 2012.
“Our plans include a free opening celebration focussing on the Parramatta River, a week of dynamic
performances (including a Festival Bar) in Riverside Theatres and the return of Festival Inside Out to
Parramatta Park, featuring free performances by two of Australia’s premiere performing arts companies.”
The Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid, was also pleased with the news, “This is a major announcement that recognises the value of Parramatta as a thriving arts, entertainment, event and cultural destination.
“Over the past two years Parramatta has grown significantly as an ‘events-led’ City, capable of attracting and hosting major initiatives that have brought many communities together and showcased the diversity of our region. This new announcement can only add to that reputation. With a thriving dining culture, one of the busiest performing arts centres in Sydney and with plenty of lush parklands and open spaces, Parramatta is a great option for major events and festivals,” Mr Chedid said.
