Saturday 14 May from 2pm head to the City Hotel to see some of the best Burlesque in Australia. Ms Bluebell will provide some of the entertainment for the afternoon. This is what she had to say when we caught up with her -
1. What inspired you to go into Burlesque?
*The first show that I saw in London with Miss Polly Rae and the Hurly Burly
Girlies. It was still very raw at that stage but brilliant. Then I saw Dita
Von Tease and that was it! I was glued! *
2. You are the former Miss Burlesque NSW, what did you have to do to gain
this title?
*I worked pretty damn hard! You really have to put on an epic show to gain a
crown. You have to think big. We were required to parade in evening, then
lingerie wear before performing three styles of burlesque - Classic, Neo and
Unique. A lot of costume making, choreography, music editing, prop making .
. the list goes on!*
3. To people who have no idea what Burlesque is what would you say?
*It really is a lot of fun. 70-80% of the audience are women because they
aspire to take the step we have taken into the world of glamour and tease.
That is what it's all about. The art of the tease and your interpretation
of it!*
4. For those aspiring to be Burlesque performers have you any advice?
*The reality is some girls have got it and some don't. That's not to say
you can't enjoy dressing up and doing a few classes for fun. However for
getting work in the industry, you really need a reputation and it takes a
good 18 months to 2 years for people to start booking you on a regular
basis. I say give it a go but remember it is a lot of hard work and a lot of
money for start-up costs. *
5. How much rehearsing do you have to do for a show?
*It depends on the show. If it is a simple fan dance I improvise most of
the time. If it is a themed act which involves props and back-up dancers I
can spend up to 10 hours to prepare. *
6. When people come to see you at Afternoon Tease at City Hotel what will
they find?
*City Hotel has recently been renovated and it looks amazing. I will be
hosting the event and guests will find a themed setting in an atmospheric
wonderland environment with burlesque performances themed with Alice in
Wonderland characters, shopping stalls and of course a full Afternoon Tea!
The afternoon wouldn't be complete without a little sing song from Alice of
course! *
7. What is next for Ms Bluebell?
*I have the Australian Burlesque Festival on the 27th May and a guest
performance in the 2011 Miss Burlesque NSW final on the 28th at the Factory
theatre before jetting off to Las Vegas to watch the Burlesque Hall of Fame
and Miss Exotic World competition the weekend of the 2nd-5th June! Can't
wait! I will be competing for the title of Miss Burlesque Australia 2012 as
I came so close to winning last year so I'm determined to win it next year
with a break to prepare in between!*
