Austalia Day 2011 - Our Featured events and more!

Australia Day is a celebration of all that is Australian. If you are just visiting, many people across Australia will make their pledges and become an Australian citizen.
So much happens on Australia Day it is difficult to decide what to do.
Personally I like to be on the bridge at 11 am to see the Ferry Races. I then tend to wander to the Rocks and then up Macquarie Street to Hyde Park.  The Rocks has some great entertainment and places to eat and drink, one of them is featured below. There will be stages with various bands playing in the Rocks and the Park at Circular Quay. Macquarie Street will be packed with old cars and Hyde Park will have stages, food and more. The trouble is I am then too tired to make it to Darling Harbour and the Fireworks. So this year even I am not sure what to do and putting this together I found new events to add to the list of possibles!

Australia Day on Fort Denison

Sydney Harbour will come alive in a display of action and entertainment this Australia Day and there’s no better place to witness it all and enjoy a lazy lunch than on historical Fort Denison.

Part of Sydney Harbour National Park and steeped in history from the city’s colonial past, the carefully restored Fort Denison features the only Martello Tower to be built in Australia. A ticket to lunch on the island includes traditional damper, scones and tea and coffee on arrival, followed by a National Park-guided tour of the tower and island’s museum and gourmet three-course Australiana-themed lunch with a matching glass of Australian wine or beer.

Sitting in the heart of the harbour and centre stage for all the action, guests will be treated to a show of boats, choppers and canons as Sydney turns it on to celebrate the nation’s big day. Australia Day festivities kick off at 11.00am with the Ferrython, which starts at Fort Denison, looping Shark Island and finishing at the Harbour Bridge and conclude with a medley of sea and air displays courtesy of the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.

A strictly limited number of tickets are available at $150 per adult and $85 for kids under 12, which includes a water taxi to and from the island and all NSW National Park fees. For more information or to make a booking, please phone TE Catering on 02 9361 5208 or email all enquiries to fortdenison@tecatering.com.au

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under at the Opera House

With special guests Neil Gaiman, Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentleman, The Jane Austen Argument and a virtual Meow Meow!
Join us as we raise a glass to the good, the bad and the twisted contributions our glorious nation has made to an unsuspecting world. Come celebrate with us in 2011 in a very different style at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. From grungy pubs to the Opera Theatre, Amanda Palmer has traversed this wide brown land time and time again, playing everywhere and collaborating with everyone - culminating in her latest album Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under.

In her third appearance at Sydney Opera House, she'll lead a deliciously dark evening of songs celebrating our weird and wonderful national day. Palmer will be joined onstage by a motley crew of singers, storytellers and degenerates, including Neil Gaiman, writer of ‘The Sandman' fame, sequined post-post-modern diva Meow Meow, Balkan lotharios Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, controversial artist-provocateur - Hazel Dooney - will provide visual stimuli, and Adelaide Fringe Festival Best Cabaret winners TheJane Austen Argument.

Since first coming to fame as leader of ‘punk cabaret' provocateurs The Dresden Dolls, Palmer has since built a formidable solo career as well. In 2008, with the help of fellow pianist and producer Ben Folds, Amanda released Who Killed Amanda Palmer, her debut solo album, along with an accompanying art book of the same name with short stories by writer (and husband-to-be) Neil Gaiman.

Amanda recently wrapped up a two year-long touring cycle that took her five-star-reviewed performance through Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. After touring the world endlessly (live highlights include acting as support for Nine Inch Nails, Cyndi Lauper, and Debbie Harry) and delivering three critically-hailed performances with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, Palmer is settling down in her hometown of Boston to work on the Kander & Ebb musical "Cabaret" with the legendary American Repertory Theater in the role of the Emcee.

Palmer has won numerous Boston Music Awards (including Best Female Vocalist) and has been named "the most stylish woman in Boston" by the Boston Globe. Palmer also tends a widely-read blog and twitter-feed and has been dubbed "The Social Media Queen of Rock N Roll" by The Huffington Post.
